LARI
The small medieval town of Lari is
situated on the highest Pisan hills at few km from the
Tuscan coast and because of its dominant position on
the entire valley of the Arno River, the massive
castle in the centre of small town, was an important military
stronghold of the Pisan Republic: from the castle walls the view
stretches from the steep hills of Volterra to the coast of Livorno and
beyond. Inhabited since Etruscan times till Roman and Middle
Ages, the Castle became in the 15th century the home of the "Vicari",
Florentine governors and members of the aristocratic families of Florence
who over the centuries transformed it into a luxury residence,
suitable for entertaining the rulers of Tuscany 'till 1848 when the Castle
was then transformed into the Palazzo Pretorio and is
today used for civil weddings.
Civil ceremonies can be performed
in the recently restored Salone Pietro Leopoldo di Toscana wich
conserves wonderful 16th Century frescoes, in the Sala
del Tribunale or the Castle courtyard which
is decorated with over 90 coats-of-arm of the Florentine
Vicari. [Top]
